Ik bladerde door oude notitieboeken. Overmorgen is het exact 11 jaar geleden dat ik dit opschreef.
5 februari 2015, 4 uur ’s ochtends. Te vroeg naar bed gegaan: 21.30 al.
Ik begin aan The Magic of Thinking Big na de laatste pagina’s van Zero to One te hebben gelezen.
The Magic of Thinking Big is een boek uit 1959. Pas toen de tunnel tussen Engeland en het continent als “Big idea for the future” werd beschreven, realiseerde ik me hoe oud het boek is. Salarissen voor verkopers variëren van $12.000 voor slecht performende tot $60.000 voor toppers. Dat zijn geen bedragen van de 21e eeuw.
Ondanks dat het boek oud is, is het nog steeds zeer leesbaar.
Van Jim Collins (Good to Great) noteer ik over Level 5 leiderschap:
- Set up for a successor
- Exercise humility, compelling modesty
- Fulfill the goal to graciously leave without leaving a gap

The big attraction of literature, of storytelling in general, is that the reader, listener, consumer is not able to make choices. The story (or the narrative mode for that matter) functions as fate; the only way to escape fate (the narrative) is to close the book, to stop reading. In this sense storytelling is an exercise in detachment.

11 jaar later:
The Magic of Thinking Big heb ik nooit meer bekeken. Zero to One wel nog een paar keer. Level 5 leiderschap bleef hangen. Altucher’s advies deed ik niet genoeg.
Die Grunberg quote over storytelling als detachment klopt nog steeds.
Fijn, zo’n oud notitieboek.
