Een generative value is een eigenschap of kwaliteit “that must be generated, grown, cultivated, nurtured”.

Playing records is back in

In The Hustle, I found a nice article about the resurrection of the vinyl LP, the record, and the album.

Besides an answer to the meager income that streaming services provide for musicians, it is also a clear signal that having a physical thing in your hands is appreciated by many people. I want to get a record for my birthday again. Oh, and by the way, Concerto still exists.

Beautiful facts:

  • In the first half of 2021, 17 million LPs were sold. That’s 86% more than in all of 2020.
  • The comparison is a bit lame but does reflect the proportions: selling 100 physical (self-produced) albums generates as much revenue as 450,000 streams on Spotify (about $1800).
  • Less funny: vinyl creates 12 times more pollution than other physical formats.

500 miljoen voor Bruce’s songs

Bruce Springsteen Born In The USA Tour

Rick Rubin: The Invisibility of Hip Hop’s Greatest Producer (video)

Nice documentary on Rick Rubin.

Best album: Daydream Nation

When I think of the best album of all time, I think of Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth. It is a culmination of previous albums Evol and Sister. The album cover is by Gerhard Richter (see the painting here).

Followed closely by Two Nuns and a Pack Mule by Rapeman. There could have been more of that in my opinion.

Ray Manzarek on Riders on the Storm (video)

Ray Manzarek (no sideburns here) explains Riders on the Storm. It’s still astonishing how his left hand plays the base line on the keyboard, while his right hand goes off into a Bach-like or jazzy solo.

Duane Denison guitar geek-out

Duane Denison from The Jesus Lizard

Duane Denison is a very special guitarist. He is most known as the guitarist in The Jesus Lizard. In this video, he geeks out on electric guitar. He is a wonderful person.

The Jesus Lizard (video)

Watch this for those not aware of what an amazing band The Jesus Lizard was. They have made a couple of classic albums and songs. The song Gladiator is my all-time favorite.

Dinosaur Jr at Pukkelpop 2009 (video)

I had never seen Dinosaur Jr live, and was massively impressed by what a well-oiled machine this band is.

The Art of Punk – Museum of Contemporary Art (video)

What a wonderful series – The Art of Punk. Hidden treasure (for me).

Black Flag. Well, actually this episode is primarily about the artist Raymond Pettibon, who invented the Blag Flag logo and created the unique merchandizing for the band.
