Een biografie die in tegenstelling tot wat de titel zou kunnen suggereren vooral een zeer levendig boek over het leven van de fotografe. De levenslessen komen mee maar overheersen niet.

John Gray – Straw Dogs

De mens is ook slechts een dier. Vooruitgang is een illusie. Geef je over aan de momenten die nooit meer terugkomen.

Werner Herzog – De Toekomst van de waarheid

Vermakelijk boek met een afdronk die zwaarder lijkt dan hij wordt opgediend. Wat ons helpt om door onzekerheid te navigeren: studie, veel lezen, wandelen. Het zoeken naar de waarheid blijft een essentiële, existentiële zoektocht.

Steven Pressfield – The War of Art

Klassieker over het overkomen van de Resistance en het maken van werk.
Gelezen als luisterboek.

Hetty Saunders – The House of Sky

Mooie biografie over de bijzondere man J.A. Baker, die bekend werd als schrijver een uniek boek.

Douglas Coupland – Bit Rot

Herlezen. Nog steeds poepgoed.

I am reading Shopping in Jail by Douglas Coupland. In the essay, I find two interesting quotes:

…novelty that reflects the powerful but less prominent forces of any culture is interesting and worthy of exploration.

I recognize this in photography. Pictures of the parade are never as interesting as pictures of what is happening on its edges. The people watching the events are more interesting than the event itself.

In an ever-flattening world of downloaded non-physical experiences, the crafted object is in the ascendant and ultimately might prove to be the trunk of the tree that gives rise to the next dominant wave of modern art.

The essays are from some time ago, and we have since seen the rise and death of the NFT as an ultimate non-physical experience in art. Yet, the analog world gets new attention when digital artifacts emerge.

The experience in concerts and festivals emerged when music went digital and streamed. At the same time, streaming channels have the distribution of music accessible to anyone. They are no longer limited to large record companies. This allows more novelty and experiments on the edge. Now, analog music media such as vinyl and cassettes reappear, and “merch”—another name for analog artifacts sold directly by the musicians—has become the standard and is more profitable for many bands than their music.

In the literary world, a similar flattening change has taken place. The internet has reduced the volume of the book-reading audience. Still, at the same time, it has opened up a channel for sharing writing and ideas. While the mainstream e-book business seems dominated by Amazon, there is enough opportunity to access readers with some additional marketing efforts, and these efforts can make a significant difference.

Social media have turned into sales channels for photography and other arts—and we should treat them as such—but analog experiences such as books, zines, prints, and expositions are where art is enjoyed.

About surrealism, the subconscious, Internet.

Surrealism today: a randomizer, throwing images and video clips at you. Like taking a snip out of time and putting these in sequence.

On Ed Ruscha. And about the insignificance of (most) of our actions and of (most) art.

About Craft and novelty. Novelty that reflects the prominent yet less powerful forces of a culture is interesting. The crafted object may be the new modern art, in a world of digital overwhelm.

A piece on Hari Kunzru’s Gods Without Men. The piece is difficult to follow, I have not read that book. It seems a literary manifestation like Harari’s Homo Deus:

Raj is whatever and whoever it is we all seem to have become: a race of time-traveling time killers Googling and Wikiing until our machines transform into something smarter than ourselves, we humans left only to hope the machines may save us in the process.

A piece about Coupland’s visit to China for the book Kitten Clone. About how China is fully embracing new technology and the western world is hesitating complacently (if complacently is a word).

I find it difficult to accept that the new iPhone 12 or foldable Samsung is necessarily a significant technological development I cannot ignore. In my opinion we are too heads-down in today to be able to make sound judgements on the historical relevance of specific, or even more general technological developments.

I understand very well why it’s located in Shanghai, but not why there isn’t also one located in Michigan, where 10 million primates needing 2,500 calories a day are sitting on top of a cold rock in the middle of the North American continent, and they’ve got nothing to do all day except go online and watch porn, TED videos, and bit-torrented movies, …

A piece about Marshall McLuhan, again difficult because I have not read McLuhans work yet. I want though. His work sounds very intriguing.
McLuhan is a futurist. Coupland sees how with all that data that “the internet” knows about us, a cloud gänger is thinkable, but he misses sentience.
The same word that Kevin Kelly uses as one of the characteristics of the Technium, the “living” body of evolving technologies.
Sentience of the Technium is not yet to be born. It is there already, says Kelly.

Hey Nostradamus van Douglas Coupland. Geweldige boek over een ontspoorde Amerikaanse familie. Rode draden zijn Columbine High-achtig  high school massacre, religieus extremisme, eenzaamheid, uitzichtloosheid. Vertelt vanuit het perspectief van vier famililieleden. Verrassend genoeg komt de vader, een tyrannieke, religieuze fanaticus, die het gezin jarenlang terroriseert nog met de minste

kleerscheuren uit de strijd.

Mijn Lieve Gunsteling van Marieke Lucas Rijneveld. Schrijfles. Spierballenliteratuur. De te veel verklarende laatste episode is niet nodig vond ik.

Gezien

De slag om de Schelde van Mattijs van Heijningen jr, op Netflix te streamen. Mooie film met mooie mix van Nederlandse en buitenlandse acteurs (Malfoid).

Geluisterd

Mooie podcast Schrijfvis. Aflevering met Mensje van Keulen luisterde ik en vond ik erg goed.

Lezend

Eerste boek van Neil Gaiman dat ik nog ongelezen op de plank heb liggen: Fragile Things, korte verhalen.

Politiek

De nieuwe politiek. Bij het CDA wassen de christenen de handen in onschuld. Hoekstra: minister van Financiën met meerdere investeringen in belastingparadijzen om belastingen te ontwijken (“het leek zuiverder”). Bijleveld: blijft schaamteloos aan na motie van afkeuring en moet gedwongen worden af te treden. Sywert van Lienden verdient miljoenen met mondkapjes en als hij daarop betrapt wordt zegt hij het geld aan goede doelen te willen schenken (moet nog gebeuren).

Gelezen

Ready Player One van Ernest Cline. Willy Wonka meats The Matrix, zegt de omslag. Geweldig spannend boek. Ik wil de film die Spielberg maakte ook nog zien.

Yotam Ottolenghi – Simpel. Ik weet niet of de recepten nu wel zo simpel zijn, maar verfrissend zijn ze zeker. Het boek is prachtig vormgegeven.

Ahmet Polat – Neither Here nor There. Tweedehands gevonden in Leeuwarden. Geweldig goede straatfotografie over een gespleten leven tussen Nederland en Turkije.

Don Hudson – Detroit [1973-1982]. Gekregen van een goede vriend. Zine met gave zwart-wit foto’s van Don Hudson.

Twin Peaks van David Lynch en Mark Frost. Blijft een geweldige serie.

Nr. 10 van Alex van Warmerdam. Krankzinnige film, geweldig.
