This Saturday I installed Ubuntu Linux on my mother’s old laptop, a Dell Vostro Intel Core i3 with 4GB from I don’t know what year, I think 2013. The installation was a breeze, using balenaEtcher to write an image to a USB stick.
Now to see what I will do with it. Host a website that I program all by myself in Django/Python?
Ubuntu means as much as being open to others, devoting yourself to others, showing compassion and respect.
Who is open to my Ubuntu laptop ?
Ik was begonnen de takken van onze leibomen te leiden met tiewraps. Toen mijn vriend, een hovenier, dit hoorde balanceerde hij even tussen lachen en huilen. Leibomen bind je met bindbuis. Bindbuis is flexibel, en vergaat. Een tiewrap zou de tak wurgen.
Verder kan je de leiboom binden en snoeien naar wens, dat is tenminste een beetje mijn afdronk van de research die ik deed. Wil je een haag-achtige structuur, dan scheer je de boom als een heg. Wil je een duidelijker vorm en takken, dan bind je de horizontale takken in de vorm, en snoeit de overige takken.
Uitkijken dat je niet van je trap lazert en op je rug tussen de verbena’s belandt. Zoals ik deed.

Ik lees het verhaal ‘Wit paard, gezien door een barst in de muur’ in De Familie Onderweg van Tommy Wieringa. (De titel is geleend van een Chinese uitdrukking, gevonden Rudy Kousbroek.) Het verhaal vertelt over Wieringa’s reis in de Silk Road Express van Moskou naar Peking. Wieringa lijkt niet te zien. Murw door het reizen in het groep, naar eigen zeggen, of beperkt door de ruimte die het verhaal mag hebben in het tijdschrift van zijn opdrachtgever. In Wolgograd wil hij niet dood gevonden worden, Door Kazachstan rijdt hij in meditatieve leegte, hij excuseert zich als hij vergeet te vertellen over de landschappen en gebeurtenissen die het opschrijven waard waren, vraagt zich af wat er te vertellen valt over een reis in een glazen lift die horizontaal door de wereld schoot.
Heel veel, lijkt me. Vraag het Paul Theroux. Wieringa is een groot schrijver, maar een matig reiziger.

We are watching The Tourist, via NPO Start. A great absurdist series, somewhat reminiscent of No Country For Old Men, yet somewhat lighter.
It is such an extremely hot day by Dutch standards. I added the latter because I am talking to my colleague, via Zoom. He is in India, and it is 42 degrees there.
I am reading a great story by Tommy Wieringa, about two brothers who run a restaurant together. One is in the kitchen, the other does the serving, and they have been trying to make each other’s lives miserable for years. A cup of coffee makes me break out in a sweat.
A cup of coffee makes me break out in a sweat. I open the doors early in the morning to bring a slight coolness into the house, but it’s mopping with the tap open. My forearms stick to the desktop. Tomorrow it will be 20 degrees and raining. Then, I will think back wistfully to this hot day.
