Understanding Ponyo’s Pop-Pop Boat Mechanism

I really like the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Since we just visited Japan, we are re-watching Miyazaki’s movies(on Netflix). In the movie Ponyo, after a flood, Sosuke and Ponyo go in a special little steamboat powered by a candle in search of Lisa, Sosuke’s mother. This time, the propulsion of this little boat caught my eye. I googled it, and it turns out to be a pop-pop boat (or puff-puff).

I didn’t understand how this mechanism worked, but of course, you can always find someone who can explain it clearly. The remarkable dynamic balance that is created by heated in a boiler, pushed out, and sucked back in due to the underpressure that is created.

PS. I found the first link died. Here is (an even more extensive) description.

Nassim Taleb and optimizing work

I love crafts, tinkering, crafting, and doing things myself. Not only is it cheaper, but you also learn a lot more and have more fun doing it.

Nassim Taleb wrote

Anything you do to optimize your work, cut some corners, or squeeze more “efficiency” out of it (and out of your life) will eventually make you dislike it.

I make one exception: tax returns. I have always done that myself, but with a company, I couldn’t do it anymore. For some things, you need an expert, like the tax return of your small business.

And sewer repair.

The spiders of Louise Bourgeois

The Mori Museum in Tokyo has a spider by Louise Bourgeois. We also saw one in Spain, at the Guggenheim in Bilbao.

The spider is a recurring motif in Louise Bourgeois’ work—a mother figure.

The friend (the spider – why the spider?) because my best friend was my mother and she was deliberate, clever, patient, soothing, reasonable, dainty, subtle, indispensable, neat, and useful as an araignée. She could also defend herself, and me, by refusing to answer ‘stupid’, inquisitive, embarrassing personal questions.
I shall never tire of representing her.
I want to: eat, sleep, argue, hurt, destroy
Why do you?
My reasons belong exclusively to me.
The treatment of Fear.
